The Manly Trust Management Training Award

The Manly Trust Management Training Award was relaunched in 2022 as part of the revamped Building Engineering Services Association (BESA) national awards. The rebranded award is open to any apprentice currently working for a BESA member who shows a high level of promise and would, in the opinion of their employer and the trustees, benefit from additional training to develop management skills that could equip them for a senior role in the future.

The successful nominee is fully funded by the Manly Trust through a management apprenticeship course deemed to meet the ambitions of the Association and the Trust. In 2022 the successful nominee was Mark Simm of HE Simm & Son.

Originally set up in 1985 by Graham Manly as the Alfred Manly Memorial Scholarship following a proposal from former BESA (then HVCA) President Allan McDougall, it supported a two-year MBA course at London Business School.

In 1994, the Manly Trust took on responsibility for the funding and the award changed its name to the Alfred Manly Management Award. It also became part of the National Training Awards for the HVAC&R industry, which subsequently became the SummitSkills Awards for Excellence (SummitSkills being the long-since disbanded Sector Skills Council for Building Services Engineering).
